As anti-aging treatments become normalised socially but the request for natural looking out comes are on the rise skin boosters are defiantly getting a name for themselves!
Skin boosters are a type of cosmetic injection that can help improve the appearance of your skin. They are like revitalizing dermal fillers that boost up your skin by providing hydration, brightening, and rejuvenation effects to the skin. There are various types of skin booster treatments available including Nucleofill, Rejuran, and Profhilo – I like to use Merz Revive which combines hyaluronic acid and Glycerol to provide significant hydration and plumping and can reverse the signs of photo aging.
What are the benefits of skin boosters?
Skin Boosters are becoming a huge favourite due to the fact that as our aesthetic understanding increases we learn that the majority of aging appearance is caused by lax skin that loses collagen over time, along side the damaging effects of free radicals in the skin – caused by sun, pollution, smoking and poor dietary intake to name a few. By plumping the skin using skin boosters we can make significant impacts in reducing the appearance of age while maintaining a natural look. As the product is place within the skin is surrounds our skin cells with an environment of “goodness” which means in turn they will thrive – bringing regenerative effects as well as restorative outcomes!
Are skin boosters fillers?
Skin boosters are use the same molecule (hyaluronic acid) as dermal fillers, though they are not the same. They key difference is that dermal fillers are an an implantable device – they are a gel formed to a specified consistency which is designed to hold shape depending on where is is being used. Skin boosters often combine HA with other ingredients and tiny amounts are place within the skin to “nourish & moisturise from within”. This effect can be enhance by using a very fine dermal filler placed in the superficial creases of the skin meaning that very little dermal filler is used at all – creating a youthful plumpness and glow, without the skin creases than can give away aging.
How long do skin boosters last?
Usually a course of 3 treatments 1 month a part is required. Results can last 9 months though retreatment with an individual treatment can occur when the client feels ready.
Can skin boosters go wrong?
Following skin boosters, you may experience some minor swelling, bruising or redness around the are treatment area. This is a completely normal side effect of cosmetic treatment and has in fact earned its name as the mosquito facial as those little bumps may last 24-48 hours post procedure though usually resolve the same day.
Skin boosters are an invasive treatment – by that we mean the natural barrier of the skin is compromised by piercing with the needle. This means that if not performed in a clinically clean/ sterile environment there are risks such as infection associated. Impurities from poorly sourced product or contamination from not following after care can also result in adverse reactions such as lumps and bumps.
The risks of skin boosters include bruising, swelling, redness, and infection at the injection site. There is also a risk of allergic reaction to the hyaluronic acid. In very rare circumstances there is a risk of blocking a vessel that feeds surrounding skin.
To minimise risks ensure you go to a reputable and qualified practitioner, be sure of the quality of products they use and stick to aftercare well.
Do skin boosters hurt?
Tiny amounts of product are injected into the skin using a very fine needle. This level of the skin can be a little sensitive, so to reduce any discomfort the area treated will be numbed first using local anesthetic cream (if not allergic to it). Paracetamol (only) may be taken prior to treatment.
Do skin boosters help acne?
The theoretical answer to this question would be Yes! Skin boosters hydrate the skin from within. Revive is moisturising and anti inflammatory – both very useful strategies in preventing acne without glogging pores. However, we would not recommend having skin boosters during an active flare up of acne to reduce risk of infection.
