Excessive sweating
Excessive sweating can be distressing for people who suffer with it, and often can be embarrassed or avoid social occasions due to its occurrence.
Excessive sweating can be caused by a number of underlying reasons including:
- anxiety
- Diabetes / hypoglycaemia
- Hyperthyroidism
- Pregnancy / menopause
- Malaria
- Some blood disease or cancers
It is recommended that if you have significant noticed excessive sweating that is new and accompanied by other new symptoms – Please see you GP.
Hyperhydrosis is a medical condition and therefore should be treated by CQC registered practitioners.
However, for most people there is no obvious underlying cause for excess sweating and it may be that the sweat glands are just more active than the average person. This may be genetic and most likely not new.
There are a range of treatments to reduce the cosmetic appearance of excessive sweating.
Strong antiperspirants
such as aluminium chloride preparations though there are aluminium free options – however safety of these products are inconclusive.
Botulinum Toxin Injections
The toxin works by blocking the chemical at the end of the nerves so that it cannot work on the glands or muscles. In the case of the sweat glands it “turns the off” to reduce sweating in the area treated. These Injections are prescription only and you should always ensure that you have a face to face consultation prior to your procedure. Results can last between 4-12 months.
Radio Frequency Microneedling
The procedure is painless and involves local numbing of the underarm followed by a 20-minute session. The square tip will be pressed against the skin as such that every square of the armpit is at least treated two to three times. The energy that is applied effectively damages and disables the functioning of the gland.
There is no visible downtime or recovery period and you can carry on with your daily routine after RF Microneedling with a few adjustments to be made over the following 3 days. Some patients might require up to three treatments while others will have the desired results in one treatment.
The radiofrequency that is generated through microneedles are used to target two-sweat glands at once: apocrine, the odor-producing gland and eccrine, the water producing gland. The best thing about radiofrequency treatment is that the results are long-lasting.
