Gummy Smile

A gummy smile is a smile that reveals an excessive amount of your gumline. It’s also known as excessive gingival display. Gummy smiles aren’t necessarily a bad thing though some people can be quite distressed by them.

There are a number of different causes for them including:

  • Genetic bone structure / dental structures
  • Smaller upper lip
  • Hypermobile muscles
  • Medication side effects
  • Underlying illness

There are a number of options to reduce the appearance of excessive gingival (gum) display.

  • augmenting lips using dermal fillers
  • replacing volume around the base of the nose using dermal fillers
  • and relaxing hyperactive muscles using muscle relaxing injections

Can help reduce the appearance of a gummy smile for most people, not everyone will be suitable for these treatments and in some instances Dental Surgery might be the only option.
